Once again Government money hasn’t changed Kendal’s economy

The business editor of The Sun tweeted this yesterday.

Govt obsessed by growth? Just 60 million of 1.4bn set aside for regional growth fund in 2010 has reached firms. Damning

Sometimes it’s difficult to see what isn’t happening locally but just behind my office is Gilkes, a local engineering firm, who last November were awarded £2.75 million to create more than 500 new jobs.

And what has happened since then? As far as I know absolutely nothing. They haven’t even applied for planning permission yet.

Imagine how many jobs would have been created if this money had been given directly to small businesses to help them fund the first few months salary for an unemployed young person.
