HMRC’s response to the PAC must have been written by Alastair Campbell

HMRC were very quick to respond to the Public Accounts Committee report into tax disputes, 00:01 hours this morning to be precise.

The press release refutes all the allegations (they would say that, wouldn’t they?). This particular comment will give you a flavour of HMRC’s attitude to the report

HMRC treats all taxpayers even-handedly, supporting the majority who comply with their duty to pay their taxes, and cracking down hard on evaders, avoiders and fraudsters.

I have been searching hard for a suitable professional comment, bearing in mind that I have dealt with HMRC for nearly forty years and the only thing I can say is

Bollocks

It’s interesting, isn’t it, that HMRC say the report is “… based on partial information, inaccurate opinion and some misunderstanding of facts” yet they refused to cooperate with the Committee and had to be forced at one point to swear on oath that they were telling the truth!
